Uh oh, new funny comic alert. This guy's name is John Mulaney, and he looks like an actor I've seen before but can't quite place. His credits on IMDB confirm that he's not that guy, so now I want to know who the other guy is so I can be less confused. Anyway, this John guy is funny.

I feel I HAVE to post this. It's Ron Swanson and Tammy #2 (real-life couple Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman) singing a song about why a paleontologist and a creationist can't be together. It's clever, but I really don't think it's all that funny. I do appreciate any attempt to see Nick Offerman more.

Teeth-Pulling Video Constitutional

Misha Collins was on The Soup, and I'm not totally sure what he was plugging. He was in a bit with some Spartacus actors (wasn't Lucy Lawless' character killed?), and Joel said he was from Supernatural, which was plugged. Is Misha coming back soon? I hope so. Also, Joel butchered the pronunciation of Castiel (which isn't shown in the clip, but Misha comes back for a bit and kicks the crap out of Joel.

I don't like American Idol, and I've even stopped watching the train-wreck auditions, but this clip made the rounds, and yeah, I would totally support this guy all the way through.

I've seen the first season of Mad Men, but not the rest. I've been meaning to, and I'm going to work like hell to get caught up before the new season starts. Maybe then I'll appreciate this a little more.

What You Should Have Watched #11

TV Schedule for the 2011/2012 Season

It’s that time of the year again, when thoughts turn from reruns and reality TV to new episodes of scripted comedies and dramas. USA and FX have kept me happy with new episodes of Covert Affairs, White Collar, Burn Notice, Louie and Wilfred, but now were back to REAL prime time.

Keep in mind that I’m a single father of three kids, so I really don’t watch anything “live.” My DVR is in heavy use, and I also rely on Hulu and network websites for some stuff.

Here’s what I’m planning on watching:

Sunday

6:00 – The Simpsons (Fox/Sept. 25)

7:00 – Family Guy (Fox/Sept. 25)

7:00 – Once Upon a Time (ABC/Oct. 23)

7:30 – Allen Gregory (Fox/Oct. 30)

9:00 – Breaking Bad (AMC/current)

9:00 – The Walking Dead (AMC/Oct. 16)

I haven’t really been blown away by The Simpsons in a LONG time. I usually let episodes pile up on the DVR and the end up falling asleep halfway through episodes. I very rarely rewind what I’ve missed before deleting the episode. Sad. I saw a trailer for Once Upon a Time when I went to see Captain America: The First Avenger. It looked pretty awesome with a Fables (comic book series) vibe. Comparisons will be made to Grimm, surely, but in subject matter only. Their executions are different, which is good. It kind of reminds me of a few years ago when Surface, Threshold and Invasion all premiered at the same time. Similarities could be found in all of them, but they were all vastly different. Too bad none of the actually survived their first seasons. I’ll give Allen Gregory a chance based on Jonah Hill. I wonder if Family Guy will move on to making fun of a new movie franchise since they finished with the original Star Wars movies last year or if they’ll move onto the first three episodes. I’d like to see them tackle Indiana Jones. There’s some good material there. Or maybe Back to the Future. Since it’s on well after my kids go to bed, I should be able to watch The Walking Dead live.

Monday

I caught a rerun of HIMYM last week, and it was the one where Marshall’s dad dies. The way they addressed it was WAY too heavy for a sitcom like this. I kind of hope we actually meet the mother this season. I mean, Ted is my least favorite of the characters, but I’d like to see some headway made on the title. I’ll give Terra Nova a chance. I’m most looking forward to Castle. Nathan Fillion is an actor I’ll watch in anything, and I’ve enjoyed every episode of this show.

Tuesday

I’m just about done with Glee. Man Up gets a couple viewings because of Dan Fogler. Ringer gets a view because of Sarah Michelle Gellar, but after watching the trailer I’m guessing that one view is ALL I’ll give it. The preview I saw of New Girl looked funny. What bothers me, though, is that Damon Wayans, Jr. is still listed as a cast member on Fox’s website, even though he’s also in Happy Endings on ABC. Oh noes! And thank you Wikipedia. Looks like all is well…well, for Happy Endings, that is. I got into Raising Hope REALLY late into the season last year, but I’m glad I finally gave it a chance. Garret Dillahunt, Martha Plimpton and Shannon Woodward make this a must-see for me. I loved the first season of Parenthood, but I missed every single episode of the second season. I should probably watch those before jumping into season three. And do I really need to say anything about Sons of Anarchy? It’s the most badass show on TV. Oh, I guess I did need to say something about it.

Will Arnett has a new show? SOLD! What’s that? Anthony Head does too? DOUBLE SOLD!! Holy crap! Alan Tudyk too? Who is answering all of my prayers? Is it TV Jesus? Modern Family is probably the most solid sitcom on TV right now, and Happy Endings was a pleasant surprise last year. I’m giving I Hate My Teenage Daughter a try because Jaime Pressley was good on My Name is Earl, and she’s nice to look at. I think I saw a preview earlier in the summer that I laughed at, but I could be wrong about that.

Out of all of the shows I plan on watching, only four of them are on CBS. Two of them are on Wednesday nights. The Big Bang Theory is a well-written sitcom that panders to the nerd in me. Person of Interest has Ben Linus from Lost, so that’s why I’m tuning in for an episode or two. NBC’s Thursday night comedy block (well, ¾ of it) is some of the smartest comedy that I’ve been fortunate to watch. Community seems fresh and new every week, Parks and Rec has some of the best characters to ever fill a show, and The Office is solid comedy that (to me) hasn’t gotten stale yet. I’m really interested to see what kind of dynamic James Spader will add to the show for however long he’s on. My eight o’clock hour seems pretty full, but Burn Notice will probably end its summer season soon (Sept. 8 according to Wikipedia), and Bones doesn’t start until November, so I’ve got plenty of time to lose interest in Person of Interest (pun…intended?) by the time it starts back up. The FX sitcoms are some of the funniest I’ve ever seen. Not necessarily the smartest and usually pandering to the lowest common denominator, but, hey, look how far that’s taken Two and a Half Men. Right now, Louie is my favorite show this summer. It speaks truth without talking down to the viewer. I’m enjoying Wilfred, but it’s darker than I anticipated. Always Sunny is probably the most crass and unredeemable show on TV, but it’s so much fun to hate the leads. The League is just solid comedy, and when talking about great characters, one always has to mention Jon Lajoie’s Taco.

Friday

Chuck has been my popcorn show since it started. I watched it because of Adam Baldwin and continued to watch it because of Yvonne Strahovski. They don’t even try to make any of their stories even slightly believable, but they’re incredibly fun to watch. It looks like I’ll be DVRing Supernatural and Fringe (these two will ALWAYS be priorities for me) and catching up with Grimm on Hulu.

Saturday

7:00 – Rules of Engagement (CBS/Sept. 24)

A show on Saturday that isn’t a rerun? Sometimes I don’t like to admit that I like this show. It’s not original or very clever, but the acting really sells it. Patrick Warburton is another guy I’ll watch in anything, and I really like the characters played by Oliver Hudson (relationship to Kate aside) and Bianca Kajlich (so so SO pretty). If this show were up against anything else, it would lose, so putting it on a Saturday is a pretty good idea on CBS’s part. Also, I may have included the wrong picture.

I know nothing about Alcatraz or Touch except that one has Jorge Garcia in it and the other has Keifer Sutherland. That’s enough for me to at least give it an episode to grab me. I’m slightly pissed at The Finder, but it’s not the show’s fault. I have a problem with backdoor pilots. I was all prepared to watch an episode of Bones last season, but instead it’s The Finder with Bones and Booth thrown in every now and then. I liked Geoff Stults and Michael Clarke Duncan, but Saffron Burrows just seemed like a poor-man’s Fiona (from Burn Notice), bad first season accent and all. Speaking of Burn Notice, USA has some really top-notch original programing, most of which has been entertaining me during the summer. I know that Covert Affairs and White Collar will be returning some time later in the fall, but Psych starts sometime in October. I’ve given up on straight-ahead cop shows (no more CSI or Law & Order for me), but a friend talked me into watching Southland over the summer and I fell in love. I have no idea when the fourth season will start, but I’m looking forward to it. I am not a fan of horror movies, so American Horror Story wouldn’t usually interest me, but Connie Britton (Friday Night Lights) is one of the stars, so I’m in for a bit…at least until I can only watch it with all the lights on. Justified and Archer are two more top-notch FX shows. I’m glad that Justified received some well-deserved Emmy nominations. I’m also glad that H. Jon Benjamin has Archer to fall back on since Jon Benjamin Has a Van was such a bad show. I was disappointed to see that Cougar Town was not on the schedule for this fall. Despite its misleading title, it’s a funny show. And what little I saw of Apartment 23 made me laugh, but it was a great scene with James Van Der Beek cashing in on his Dawson fame to have sex. Simple but funny.

So, I think that’s everything. Isn’t it enough? I’d embed some trailers, but there are just too many, so I hyperlinked all the shows to their official web pages. It’s a little more work on your part, but you can do it. I believe in you, you lazy bastards!

It's mostly made up of footage from the previous two movies, but there's some new stuff with Gordon, and we get to see a little bit of Bane. I have quite a few friends who are teachers. My ex-wife used to be a teacher. My sister is a teacher. My mom used to be a teacher. I had SOOOOOO many good teachers during my time as a student. I believe that teachers are a vastly underappreciated group of professionals. I also like Matt Damon, and here he is standing up for teachers. Although, the Good Will Hunting clip spliced into this is a bit jarring.



Drive looks like a pretty good action movie, with the surprisingly cast Ryan Gossling as the lead. I also like the last half of the trailer, where they show a bunch of action with a soft instrumental piece behind it. Classy.

I really like True Blood, but I can also appreciate that it's a ridiculous show.



I think Sons of Anarchy is going to be the first show of the season to hit the small screen with new episodes, so YAY!!!!!



Okay, as a four-minute clip, I think this is crazy awesome. This is apparently from a project where a guy remade the entire Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope (yeah, I call it by it's full title) using 15-second clips made by Star Wars fans. Like I said, great concept for a short, funny piece, but I don't know how it would hold up for the entire movie.

Comic Book Reviews for the Week of Dec. 17, 2008 (On-Going Series)

Amazing Spider-Man #581

All right, this is more like it. I’ve been waiting for this story for quite some time. I can’t say that I’m please with Harry’s return or how he was brought back, but I’m extremely happy it was explained, and I’m even happier that, after being told time and time again that everything was still in continuity after Brand New Day, we’re shown proof. Spectacular Spider-Man #200, where Harry “died”? Still good. Normie’s hate for Spider-Man? Still good. Hell, Normie himself? Still good. I didn’t know what was going on with Harry’s family since he’s been written as a younger character, but the marriage, birth of his son, and his death are all still cannon. Even Charlie Weiderman, from Stracyznki’s run, was mentioned. Out of everything that was brought up with BND, the Harry situation was the one thing I really wanted answered, and here we go. Good job Mr. Slott.

Avengers: The Initiative #19

A story well-told involving a lot of characters in a lot of battles during the invasion. There’s death (Spinner, possibly Shooting Star, Whiz Kid and Crusader), new-found heroism (3-D Man and Crusader), and an invasion foiled. I was taken aback by the suddenness of Crusader’s death. It made sense, though, and with his wish we might not have heard the last of Crusader. The future of the Initiative will be very interesting indeed with Norman Osborn now running the show. And what of the Negative Zone prison? What’ll happen with that?

Deadpool #5

This is nothing but ridiculous fun. I liked how Way went non-linear for the story; it was very effective. And Deadpool ended up double-crossing EVERYBODY in the end. And he still didn’t get paid. What a poor, poor mercenary. And it doesn’t look like he’ll be making any money next issue when he goes up against Tiger Shark.

Doktor Sleepless #10

That was more like it. I actually understood what was going on in this issue. Of course, the good Doktor wasn’t in it at all, so that might account for some of the understanding. Basically, the police commissioner has just sanctioned the killing of Sleepless, and the cop who found out who the killer is gets to kill HIM after everything is all said and done. Pretty straight-forward issue, actually. Too bad they’re not all like that.

Angel: After the Fall #15

This is my favorite issue of the series so far. This is the only issue I’ve read where I could actually hear the voices of the characters as I read it. That means the writing was spot on. I could hear a smirk in everything Spike said. I could hear Wesley’s Britishness. Gunn, Angel, Conner, they were all there. After a questionable start to the series, I’m really liking where it is, and I hope I’m going to like where it’s going. I don’t know if I’m all that sad about Conner. I really didn’t like him before Season 5, and likeable Conner wasn’t around enough. I enjoyed him in this comic, though, so I guess he will be missed. I wish they’d find a way to bring Fred back, but I guess that’s over and done with. I DO miss her.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season 8 #20

Eh, it was a nice, campy little throw-back to the first few seasons of the show, but that’s it. Just a nice, quick little rest until we get back into the thick of it…I hope. I’ve never really liked any cartoon adaptions or cartoon-like comics. [sarcasm] I’m way too old for that. [/sarcasm] I’ll be happy next month when we’re all back to normal.

Ex Machina #40

Oh, Christ, that was a classic issue. One of the best of the series, actually, and that’s saying a lot. Vaughan wrote himself and Harris into the story. Mayor Hundred wanted to do his memoirs as a comic book, and they were interviewing for the gig. By all accounts, both artist and writer scored high marks in their respective interviews, but who should get the job? Garth Ennis and Jim Lee. And the last two pages are even by the duo. Frickin’ classic. Vaughan at one point makes reference to Grant Morrison and his meta approach to comics, and this was definitely different from that. As much as I loved the end of Morrison’s Animal Man run, it was like he was stroking himself for all the world to see. Vaughan and Harris’ appearance in this issue wasn’t like that at all. It was very natural. And again, the ending was classic. Kudos, gentlemen.

Fables #79

The residents of Fabletown don’t get minor disturbances, do they? They also don’t get a month or two to rest their bones. They’re just done with the war, and now something possibly worse than the Adversary is breaking down all of their binding enchantments, which results in all of the Fable building collapsing. I’m not all that thrilled with the Mowgli back-up, but I have faith that I’ll end up loving it. I do like the robotic tiger and the drunk monkey. That’s funny.

Fallen Angel #32

I hear this book is ending next issue to be restarted in a couple of months. I don’t understand that. I know #1 issues sell better, but I think this breaks up the flow of the work…unless that’s what David is going for, then okay. This was a decent penultimate issue. The gang stops fighting with each other and get back to Bette Noir with the sword that can kill Moloch. Too bad he breaks it. And I assume that was God that showed up in tennis garb. We’ve got angels and demons running around, I guess it was inevitable that God would show up.

Greatest American Hero #1

Nostalgia can be cruel sometimes. I remember watching this on TV and I have fond memories of it. This issue though was, well, it wasn’t horrible, but there was nothing there to keep me coming back.

Invincible Iron Man #8

Have I mentioned how much I love this book? I like it when smart characters can just be smart without having to be dumbed down for the masses. This is really the first glimpse we’re getting of Osborn running the show, and yay for Tony for sticking it to him just a little bit. I really, really think this Dark Reign era of Marvel is going to make for some great stories.

Mighty Avengers #20

This was the Wasp’s funeral, and our reintroduction to Hank Pym. I thought his outburst at Tony was totally justified, and I’d like to see where he and Thor went. Knowing Thor, I’m sure it was a place to either drink or fight or maybe both. I do believe Osborn is going to be a lot of appearances this year. I’ve got a question, though. Is Mighty Avengers over? Will Dark Avengers replace it or just supplement it?

Squadron Supreme #6

I’d probably like this book a little more if the artwork didn’t distract me so much. It’s hideous. That and all of the regular 616 analogues are pretty redundant. I mean, that’s what the Ultimate universe is for. Hell, Fury is even from that universe. At least at the end we got an appearance from Superman and Green Lantern, I’m sorry, I mean Hyperion and Dr. Spectrum. Are we building up to a battle between the Squadron, who have yet to show up in their own title, and Fury’s new S.H.I.E.L.D.?

Thunderbolts #127

This was an excellent issue that let all the really bad baddies have their day. I was almost rooting for them to kill Songbird. This title is going to be the one to watch, I think, now that Norman is running things. I’m guessing these guys are going to be his go-to, behind-the-scenes strike team. I’m also anxious to see where Songbird is going to end up. Dark Reign just started and it already rocks.

Ultimate Fantastic Four #59

Well, Sue is back, so that’s good. But apparently Reed infected her with some nanobots, so that’s not good. And the duo, instead of going after Reed, is going to look for Johnny. I can’t say that I blame them. Infecting them (assuming he did that to more than just Sue) was a pretty dick move.

Walking Dead #56

I think I’m just about done with zombies. I AM interested in seeing what Washington D.C. is like, but I think I’m going to put this book aside for a few months and see if it comes back any fresher. Right now it’s just the same old same old. Group of people traveling, tensions running high, that sort of thing. Maybe things will be different once they make it to a big city.
