Video of the Day

I have problems with this video. Not the song, just the video.

First off, this is the song that got me into Childish Gambino. Before I saw this performance on Conan, Donald Glover was just Troy on Community. Awesome, yes, and funny as hell, but I had no idea he was rapper. When I first heard about it, I thought it would be comedy, but nope. I immediately bought Camp then combed through the Interwebs for his previous works.

With that out of the way, I want to mention a couple of problems. I dislike the edited nature of the video. It's okay when there's only a smidge of cussing, but when there's more than a smidge it just sound weird. That was the biggest problem since it happened so often.

Leaving off the tag at the end of the song was a crime. It served as a wonderful punctuation to the incredibly dysfunctional relationship the two main characters of the song had.

Great song, disappointing video.

Pre-Superbowl Video Constitutional

Uh oh, new funny comic alert. This guy's name is John Mulaney, and he looks like an actor I've seen before but can't quite place. His credits on IMDB confirm that he's not that guy, so now I want to know who the other guy is so I can be less confused. Anyway, this John guy is funny.

I feel I HAVE to post this. It's Ron Swanson and Tammy #2 (real-life couple Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman) singing a song about why a paleontologist and a creationist can't be together. It's clever, but I really don't think it's all that funny. I do appreciate any attempt to see Nick Offerman more.

I should have expected something twisted from Jon Lajoie (The League's Taco), but I wasn't expecting this. I laughed. I'm not proud of it, but I laughed.

New Foo Fighters video for "These Days." It's concert compilation video, but that doesn't mean it isn't awesome.

You know, this isn't a bad looking sloppy joe from the Epic Meal Time guys. I do enjoy lots things combined to make a new thing.

Despite Twilight, I actually do like some Vampire stuff. Buffy, Angel, True Blood. But this commercial for the Audi S7 with LED headlights is pretty damn clever.

God Bless America looks like a darkly humorous movie, but it seems a little masturbatory to me, like Bobcat Goldthwait just gave us a list of all the people he really wants to kill but can't.

A supercut of birds being flipped!

Here's the trailer for the second half of the current season of The Walking Dead. It has zombies.

I am SOOOO looking forward to the new season of Game of Thrones. It's the only reason I pay for HBO.

Kristen Bell is adorable and awesome and most of the reason why I'm watching "House of Lies," and I want to drug Dax Shepard and sell him into white slavery overseas. This should be the reaction everyone has when finally getting the thing they've always wanted.

Why I Love the Internet: Reason #94 - I don't have to watch the Superbowl to see all the awesome commercials. Now, somebody go put one of those couches in my house. The, um, the girl one.

Eastbound and Down comes back this month. That is all you need to know.

Donald Glover's "Save Community" PSA.

Despite Jay Leno coming in at the end, this is probably my favorite Superbowl commercial.

Clean Shaven Video Constitutional

Nathan Fillion on Conan last week. I want to be best friends with this guy.

Damn, looks like I've got to go vote for the People's Choice Awards now. Thanks a lot, Christy!

So apparently Donald Glover hangs out with puppets? You can't see him in the video, but you can hear him. Sounds like he's the one with the camera.

I don't think this video is all that creative, but some of it is pretty funny. It's two guys at Target trying to get help finding various made-up items.

Has Liam Neeson alway been a badass, or was Taken a shift for him? Whatever the reason, I like him in roles like this. Here's the trailer for his latest film, The Grey.

Oh, HELLS yes! A horror movie written by Joss Whedon? I'll be seeing this in the theater, thank you. No Netflix or Redbox for me on this one. And it's got Topher from Dollhouse in it. Nice to see Whedon giving some work to someone he's already worked with. You don't see that much. /sarcasm

I'll sign an online petition to save Community, but that's about it. After having my heart broken by the likes of Firefly, Arrested Development and Terriers, I realize that good shows sometimes get cancelled. But sure, I'll sign a petition. And post funny videos.

Will Ferrell made some Old Milwaukee commercials for some reason. Sure, why not?

I just found out that American Psycho is getting a remake, and I wanted to share my favorite scene from the movie. I really like Christian Bale. I love Huey Lewis and the News. I love Christian Bale deconstructing Huey Lewis and the News with such a smile. And I love Christian Bale's fancy footwork right before going at Jared Leto with an axe. There are more monolouges following the HL&tN one, which are almost just as good, but this is my favorite. Be warned, there's blood and some language, but I think it's worth it.

American Psycho - Pop Monologues from laviesportive on Vimeo.

Jason Segel. Alison Brie as a Brit. Andy from Parks and Recreation. The same guy who did Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to the Greek. This is a romantic comedy I can get behind.

"Thunderstruck" is far and away my favorite AC/DC song. It just pumps you up. So yeah, I'm probably going to like it in a Star Wars mash-up.

Okay, this mash-up of Star Wars and The Grinch Who Stole Christmas made me smile.

If I just say, "Star Wars cello duel," will that be enough to get you to view this video? Musically, it's awesome, and visually, it's surprising.

THIS is why I haven't gotten my kids Kinectimals for our (my) XBox.

Like Pulp Fiction? Ever wanted to see it chronological order? Neither did I, but apparently somebody did. They recut the movie and put the whole damn thing on YouTube. So, here it is.

Also, in case you've forgotten: When I can remember to add this to the bottom of my posts, I’m going to whore myself out with an impassioned plea: click on the ads. PLEASE click on the ads. I don’t care if you exit out of it immediately or actually look around. This isn’t some professional blog where I believe in the products I’m shilling. These are automatic ads placed by Google. But when you click ads, I get a little bit of money, and as a single father of three, every penny from every source helps...especially with Christmas looming on the horizon. So I’m going to keep this tiny bit of begging at the bottom of my posts, and I hope you’ll take an extra 10 seconds after reading my blog to click on an ad. What You Should Have Heard #82

Childish Gambino – Camp

I’m taking a little break from the weekly Mix CD for a review of an album I bought/downloaded two weeks ago.

It's weird. I bought this album expecting something different. I bought it after hearing "Heartbeat" on Conan, and on first listen it's a funny song. So there's a whole album by Community actor Donald Glover? Well of course the rest of it will be hilarious. I was expecting something similar to Lonely Island. I was extremely wrong. And then I listened to "Heartbeat" more, and it started to sound a little sad and a little mean. Layers, man. Layers.

I can’t identify with much that Glover is singing/rapping about. The awkwardness with girls during childhood, sure, but growing up as a black kid in (what sounds like) predominately white schools and not considered black enough by family and peers? Nope, no identification there. The girls that show up after the fame. Not quite. But I can identify with the passion he shows. His emotion draws me into his world and his lyrics hold me captive.

Glover’s lyrics range from childhood insecurities, incredible nerd references, the pressures of increasing fame and, of course, carnal conquests. It’s all terribly inspired, and some of the best comparisons are so obvious they make you wonder why you haven’t heard them before.

Lyrics - Race

It’s hard to make HOV the footsteps you followin’
Especially when your niggas look like Carlton

What’s the best way to show just how white of a black man you are? Make a Fresh Prince of Bel-Air reference and compare your friends to the whitest black guy on the show. Jay-Z he’s not.

This one kid said somethin’ that was really bad
He said I wasn’t really black because I had a dad
I think that’s kinda sad
Mostly ‘cause a lot of blacks kids think they should agree with that

Wow, that’s just…wow.

Lyrics – Nerd

Okay, it’s Childish Gambino, homegirl drop it like the NASDAQ

I’m throwing this out there because it specifically references the NASDAQ instead of the all-encompassing Wall Street. It just stood out to me.

Niggas with OCD, NWO
All white like my clothes, CW shows
Nigga got signed? It’s an anomaly
No co-sign? Trigonometry

Hey, I watch Supernatural on the CW! And yeah, looks like all the “urban” shows of UPN laid to rest when it merged with The WB. There are plenty of magical creatures and over-privileged white kids still there, though, so it’s a great line. And he ends the verse with a play on cosine? My math-loving brain squealed a bit.

I said I want a full house, they said, “You got it, dude”

I cannot look back on this show with any fondness, but I watched enough of it growing up (as well as most of the TGIF line-up) that yeah, I get this.

Lyrics – The Ladies

I’m just making up for fucks I missed in high school

I keep it wrapped until I meet the right one
‘Cause I ain’t Mumford, I ain’t tryin’ to have sons

Throwin’ a Mumford & Sons reference out there when talking about using a condom? Really, how much of a whiter reference can you make?

Sixty-nine is the only dinner for two

I’m going straight for your thighs like the cake you ate

She ain’t a killer but she’d fuckin’ blow your head off

Are we datin’? Are we fuckin’?
Are we best friends? Are we some’n in between that?
I wish we never fucked, and I mean that
(But not really
You say the nastiest shit in bed and it’s fuckin’ awesome)

She’s an overachiever ‘cause all she do is succeed

Say this one slowly, maybe separate the syllables in the last word, then you might get it.

Lyrics – Dated

Made the beat then murdered it, Casey Anthony

Part of the problem with including pop culture in your lyrics is how dated your music will be. How long will Casey Anthony be talked about before some other reject from Jerry Springer/Maury Povich/Jeremy Kyle kills a kid and tries to convince us all that it wasn’t her fault?

All I wanted was some more like Ashton

Yeah, they separated about a week after the CD came out.

I give you money, then you Bernie, then you made off

But it’s Pete Wentz, goes both ways

Lyrics – Revealing

I always wanted to get picked on the cool team
But alone is exactly how I should be

Some of these lines just pop up in the songs, and they kind of hurt. These are the ones that I can relate to. Then there’s “Letter Home”:

You’re the only girl that I have ever wanted
Every other girl who’s tryin’ to be you
My momma says that I should write you letters
But I think you’re with other dudes

Take my hand
You’ll like it
You don’t even have to call
Yes, I’ve had some alcohol, I’m sorry

Take my hand
You don’t even have to call
You’re somewhere out there after all

You’re all I ever wanted
You’re all I ever wanted
You’re all I ever wanted

The one that got away. I’ve said it before, we all have one, whether we want to admit it or not. The one we think about when we’re arguing with our significant other, the one whose grass will always look greener. I dread the day I make that inevitable drunk dial, when I’m so deep in my head that I can’t escape the choices I’ve made. For now, though, I just write about it.

The album ends with a story that ties everything together nicely. You can even imagine it with a bow on top. Childhood, girls, awkwardness, intelligence…nothing about race, but that makes it better, like anybody can listen to the whole album and come away feeling like this was made for them.

I admit that I don’t have a lot of rap experience. I like very little of it, and I think most of what I like might be considered hip hoprather than rap (although when I read that link I found out it's just TYPES of rap I don't like, and that makes me feel better. There are types of rock, pop, jazz, classical, etc. music that I don't like, too). I like a bit of The Roots, a bit of Wu-Tang, a bit of Dr. Dre and a bit more of Eminem. Throw in some Handsome Boy Modeling School, some DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince and some various old-school tracks and I’ve got a mix I can listen to if not totally understand. I like to consider myself very open when it comes to music. My rap (and country, if I’m to be honest) interests would actually show that I’m not as open or inclusive with my listening choices as I’d like you to believe. So when I hear something like this, something that I can thoroughly enjoy and halfway relate to, I eat it up.

I just found out that Childish Gambino’s earlier albums were available as free downloads, and I’ve tracked them all down. I seriously can’t wait to listen to everything I’ve missed.

And yes, Donald, I still haven’t got off the bus, either.

[Insert Witty Title] Video Constitutional

This was a neat little video that the cast and crew of Doctor Who put together after David Tennant left the show. Wow, man...just wow.

Here's the trailer for the latest Mission Impossible movie. Despite his personal craziness, I still dig Tom Cruise as an actor. Also, Simon Pegg is in it, so there you go. I'm still looking forward to Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye more than I am him taking over this franchise.

Joel McHale makes an audition tape for People Magazine's Sexiest Man Alive. Yeah, I'd vote for him.

This song goes out to the power-hungry IT guy at work who totally removed Spotify from my computer. I'm glad I spent all that time finding the 15,000 songs I wanted in my playlists. Thanks, jerk.

Every death from HBO's Game of Thrones? Awesome. Set to Guns 'n Roses' cover of "Knockin' on Heaven's Door?" Even better.

Game of Thrones Death Montage from Doctor Roboto on Vimeo.

I'm starting to throw up just about everything shared with me by a few friends. That means you'll probably getting some Hunger Games stuff. Thanks, Christy! FYI, I think I'm going to trim my beard like the one Wes Bentley's character is sporting.

The Foo Fighters with Joan Jett playing "Bad Reputation." I wish she would have been at the concert I went to instead of Lemmy.

I'm not a cat person, mainly because I'm allergic to them. But oh my God I would become a crazy cat lady and fill my house with these, allergies be damned.

I'm not a sports person either. I had never heard of Jerry Sandusky before the past couple of weeks, and I'm absolutely horrified at what he's alleged to have done. I say alleged because the guy hasn't been found guilty in a court of law, but in the court of me, yeah, dude's guilty. And listening to this interview with Bob Costas, wow, he doesn't help himself at all. I've also decided that Bob Costas has replaced Stephen Colbert as my favorite interviewer. He absolutely rips into Sandusky, but he does it so calmly and professionally that I can almost understand why Sandusky seemed so open about some of the things he talked about.

I don't have an iPhone, but now I feel very sorry for Siri.

I've missed a LOT of Epic Meal Time. Time to catch up!

Why not, JGL? Why not?

If this passes, my blog is finished. If you enjoy this blog or just about ANY entertainment-related blog, fight this.

Looks like I'll be hitting Amazon up soon for some Childish Gambino mp3s. Psst, it's Donald Glover from Community. Don't tell anybody. It's a secret.

Well, this video totally convinced me to put in surveillance cameras in my house.
