TV Reviews for the Week of Sept. 14, 2008 Pt. 2

I like this new grad student. He brings more life experience into the group, and it’ll be fun watching them becoming uncomfortable as they trade sexual innuendos with each other. I also like that Sweets is getting a larger, if somewhat unexplainable, role in the group. While I like him around, I find it odd that a psychologist is around the lab so often. I do hope he can help Hodgins, though. His breakdown is very believable, and I hope it’s not glossed over quickly. I thought the dog whisperer was pointless. Well, maybe not pointless, but ridiculous. At least it wasn’t a dog psychic, though.

Well, I guess my prediction of FX tying in all of its shows might be a bit off. Dutch from The Shield shows up, but he ain’t Dutch, just a fed, so I guess that idea is scratched. This episode showed us that the SoA aren’t all bad…well, yeah they are, but they take care of their town. When a 13-year-old girl gets raped at a traveling carnival, the father goes to the SoA for vengeance. During the search we get a glimpse of the scum that populate the area, along with a somewhat humorous misunderstanding.

I really don’t know why I continue to watch this show. Just because I’m a comic book geek and this is a show based on a comic book character, that doesn’t mean that I HAVE to watch it. I really enjoyed the first few seasons, though. I guess I’m hoping that it’s going to get better. Okay, when did Chloe have any other powers besides healing? I think I missed something from last season. Or maybe not. I guess she doesn’t know, either. Ever since Lois started reporting for the Planet, Chloe has become obsolete. I heard they were introducing her into the comic continuity, but I haven’t seen it, and I don’t really care. They had to give her powers on the show in order to have a somewhat valid reason to keep her on…which is good, because she’s nice to look at. I guess the Martian Manhunter won’t be joining Oliver and his Justice League any time soon. So Clark is working at the Daily Planet now. Hmm, maybe I should have applied there after college. I bet that since I actually have a degree in journalism, I would have started out as editor-in-chief. How do Lois and Clark rate reporting jobs when they have no real-world experience or college degrees? I understand Chloe. She was in college and started out at the bottom. She worked her way up. I think I remember Lois starting out at a different paper or a different department in the Planet. But Clark? Sigh. I’m hoping for bigger and better things this year with some new writers on the show. Of course, I’ve been saying that for the past few seasons, and I’ve yet to blown away. I say get James Marsters back. He was the best thing to happen to the show in quite some time.

This is a great show. Personally, I think it’s a great successor to Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. Darker than both, and the humor is more on par with Angel, a little less frequent, but always in the right place and always appropriate. This issue continued bringing the same level of awesomeness we’re accustomed to. Dean is alive and nobody knows why or how. We do know the who, and he’s a major badass. We’ve spent the past few seasons battling the minions of hell, and now apparently God has taken an interest in the brothers. I’m extremely excited about this season. Heaven and Hell? Sam finally hooking up with Ruby and working with her? Incidentally, was Ruby the chick in Sam’s room when Dean and Bobby show up, or was she possessing one of the other random raven-haired beauties we saw in the episode? They all vaguely resembled each other. So, yeah, great episode, and can’t wait to see where the season takes us.

I watched this based on the ridiculousness of the commercials. I haven’t seen an episode, so I’m going in blind. And wow. Look what I’ve been missing. Cannibalism. Man hunting. Gorilla masking. The solution to the energy crisis. I may have a new favorite sit-com.

I didn't think they were going to have a big "FX" world. No comic book fantasy for you! The same guy that created The Shield created Sons of Anarchy. I think that is the only tie in. Or maybe he produces both, I don't remember.

Eh, a guy can hope.

I do enjoy the "cross-overs" too. Who else has done it? I don't think spin-offs would really count, although, characters from the originals do sometimes show up in spin-offs. Like Woody showing up in Frazier, but, Cheers was already off the air. Interesting topic...to me anyways.

I think Cliff, Norm and Frasier appeared on Wings at some point. ER and First Watch had some crossover episodes, as did The Practice and Ally McBeal (I think). Noah Wylie and George Clooney played doctors on an episode of Friends, but I'm pretty sure they weren't supposed to be their ER characters. Lisa Kudrow played Phoebe on Friends and her identical twin sister Ursula, who also appeared on Mad About You. At one point Helen Hunt's Mad About You character and her friend appeared on an episode of Friends and were confused by seeing Phoebe, thinking she was Ursula. On an episode of Mad About You, Paul Riser had to give up his apartment, which he was sub-letting to Jerry Seinfeld. Seinfeld didn't appear in the episode, but Kramer did. That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

Rob, you need to run out right now and rent the first two seasons of 'Sunny'--probably the funniest show on tv right now.

I think you're right. I do enjoy the totally ridiculous, and if the previous seasons were like these two episodes, I think I'd really enjoy them.
