Samuel Smith's Organic Cider (Beer Review)

It’s been a while since I’ve had a hard cider, but I’ve enjoyed what I’ve tasted. I’m also a big fan of the various Samuel Smith brews (their Oatmeal Stout is my favorite beer), so I was looking forward to this. In all honesty, I was a bit let down. It was a very passable drink, probably enjoyed most by people who really don’t care all that much for beer, but I thought it was overall weak. It had a nice golden color, but a very weak aroma. I don’t think I’m being unfair in expecting more of an apple presence. This is also true of the taste. While each mouthful was a little more...appleful...than the last, it still tasted like a slightly alcoholic (5%) version of the watered-down juice my kids drink. The strongest characteristic of this cider was the carbonation. Too much. When all is said and done, this isn’t a drink I would turn down if offered to me, but it’s not what I’d choose if there were something else, even regular apple juice, available.

I'm going to stop reading this blog if you continue to add a 'y' to the end of nouns. You're more orignal and creative than "appleful!"

I didn't even do that in this post!

What about appletastic, or applerific, or appleacian (back-woods apples that tend to keep all relationships in the family).

Sammy Smith is one of my favorite brewers - Oatmeal Stout is also an old favorite of mine, and the Taddy Porter is also not too bad (and I generally feel like a porter is just a poor excuse for a stout, though Jeff would disagree with me on that.) The Nut Brown's a good nostalgic beer for me, and the winter edition's usually pretty good too.

What I love is that it's a Yorkshire beer - one of my roommates was from Tadcaster, which was the only way I could locate the place, though I never made a pilgrimage to the tap room. Dumb, dumb Kate.

Much better. See. I knew you could rise above the low-brow language appleful! I'm proud of you.

Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout was my first "good" beer, meaning my first non-generic domestic (Bud, Miller, etc.). It was then that I knew I would end up a beer snob.

Out here there's actually a group called S.N.O.B.: Support Native Oregon Beer. Beer is serious stuff in Portland (though sometimes it's a battle of who hops the most.)

If it weren't illegal, I'd have you send me some of your favorites.

Actually, list off some of your favorites, and I'll see if any are carried down here. I'll do a review.

Wait - I can't send you beer? I thought it was just wine. Let me know but I'll hunt some out one way or another. There's a lot out here that isn't bottled or distributed so you may just have to visit :)

It is illegal to receive beer through the mail in Tennessee. That and my lack of $200 to spend on a bottle of beer will forever keep my Holy Grail, Sam Adams Utopias, a picture on an eBay auction.
